Rules for Radiomakers (Kids & Adults)

This list may be useful in your work with kids and teens. It comes from the producers of New York Kids, for 9 years a live radio program for kids in New York City on WNYC Radio. These ideas were both the guiding principles for the producers and ideas that they taught to kids they worked with at New York Kids.

Rules for Radiomakers (Kids & Adults)

  1. Truth Never tell lies on radio
  2. Swearing Never use bad language on radio
  3. Slander Never say bad things about people
  4. Accuracy Always check facts and aim to be accurate
  5. Deception Never deceive listeners in any way. If you get caught, no one will believe you anymore.
  6. Child Rights Always promote child rights in how we produce the program. Always make the rights of all children part of your responsibility as a broadcaster.
  7. Right to Reply When you broadcast criticism of people or organizations,
make sure they have the opportunity to answer the criticism. You have the right to express an opinion and the responsibility to ask questions. Everyone has the right to reply.
